Approaching Football (American) like Basketball? Modeling Points per Drive

Very general/introductory discussion but was curious for pros/cons in approaching modeling football along the lines of basketball by looking at points per drive, a la points per possession.

Football is going to have very few drives compared to the total amount of possessions in a basketball game, but similarly teams alternate possessions in each sport.

Game effects can certainly impact the number of drives. Then there is trade-off between teams playing faster and efficiently versus teams that can’t generate 1st downs and thus have a lot of drives. The dynamic of rushing vs. passing which is also more pronounced in College vs NFL.

Special teams also provide an additional wrinkle that does not really have a basketball comparison.
